Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency the website which provides commentary and videos on depictions of women's roles in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic, blogger and award-winning feminist for nearly a decade. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are represented in popular culture. Alongside working to highlight the problems surrounding sexual harassment and assaults on women and other minorities in online spaces she is dedicated to breaking down the stigmas and stereotypes prevalent in popular culture. A graduate in the field of political and social thinking at York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public speaker and she has delivered speech at the TEDxWomen Festival and The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. When she was a student at the university, Sarkeesian became interested in the issues surrounding gender and rights for women in the early stages. The ambitious young lady was harassed online for launching a website featuring a series about gender and videogames. This attack was not enough to stop her. It actually strengthened her commitment as a feminist and media critique. Sarkeesian has been awarded numerous awards to recognize her prominent contributions to the field of feministism. Anita Sarkeesian, a media journalist who has received many awards, and also founded Feminist Frequency, an educational organization that focuses on the ways women are depicted within the popular culture stories.
